There is a great deal to be said about the styles of Portuguese wine. Despite the fact that it is a relatively small country, Portugal has a great climatic diversity with the single most important influence being the Atlantic Ocean. Portugal has a wealth of indigenous grape varieties, rarely found in other wine producing countries. Wine experts assume that Portugal is home to around 300 grape varieties, many of which originate from the Middle Ages, and some may be even older. Over the centuries, these grape varieties have adapted perfectly to their individual territory.
Port wine is another famous Portuguese invention. A famous sweet fortified wine produced in Douro, otherwise simply known as Port, Vine do Porto, is a wine named not after its origin but after Porto, the harbor from which it is shipped.
