Bordeaux is the largest AOC region in France, situated in the South West part of France and lying exactly half way between the Equator and North Pole. Enjoying an ideal climate for wines with strength and structure on the one hand and finesse and elegance on the other. The proximity of Atlantic with the warm Gulf Stream ensures a mild climate condition, the soils of Bordeaux are also very varied and differences in their water management and heat retention determine which grapes can be ripened successfully in the moderate, relatively wet conditions.
In respect to the soil conditions, three zones should be distinguished within the huge Bordeaux area, each of which forms an independent entity, Left Bank, Right Bank and Entre deux Mers
Medoc lies on the left back of the Garonne and Gironde on whose well drained sand and gravel soil where virtually only red grapes are grown. Graves in the south whose alluvial soils create very delicate, aromatic, reds and dry whites, as well as a few sweet wines.
Saint Emillion and Pomerol lies on the right back of Dordogne River are the gravely Pomerol and Chalky Saint Emilion.
Entre deux Mers is situated between the Garonne and Dordogne River. This area between two rivers, with its heavily clay and gravel soil, which produces plethora a differing wine characteristics. From the very aromatic, lively, bold, full-bodied to even some mellow wines.
Almost all red Bordeaux wines and most Bordeaux whites are produced from a blend of grape varieties, as due to the unpredictability of the rainfall, its risky to rely on one varietal.
In Bordeaux, Cabernet Sauvignon is dominant in Haut Medoc and also very important in Bas Medoc, in these areas the gravels ensure the Cabernet Sauvignon can reliably ripen.
